The first annual “Bank of Tucson Coaches’ Night Out” took place recently in the University of Arizona Student Union Main Ballroom. The event, hosted by Hall of Fame Coach Lute Olson, attracted more than 300 people and gave Tucson a chance to meet the 2010-11 Wildcat Men’s Basketball Team and to hear from Head Coach Sean Miller. Making the evening unique was the presence of several legendary UA coaches, all of whom have won NCAA titles.
In addition to Coach Olson, special guests included Mike Candrea (softball), Andy Lopez (baseball), Rick Larose (men’s golf). Highlights of the evening were meeting the young men that will compete on the hardwood for the Wildcats this upcoming season and welcoming Coach Miller and his family to the Tucson community.
Coaches’ Night Out continues the tradition of celebrating the rich history of UA men’s basketball and supporting important charitable causes in the Tucson community. The primary beneficiary of the event is the Arizona Cancer Center, one of the leading academic and clinical cancer centers in the world. This year’s event also supported the new Diamond Children’s Medical Center at UA and Southern Arizona Community Sports, Inc., a grass-roots, non-profit entity dedicated to expanding youth sports opportunities in Greater Tucson.
This family-friendly event is open to the public and offers a rare opportunity for youngsters to get to meet the Wildcat players ‘up close and personal.’ In turn, this makes collegiate level activities seem more attainable to the youth of our city, which ultimately motivates them to keep moving!
